Born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Dr. Angelo Gousse has come a long way in terms of miles and training to become one of the best female urologists in the country, pioneer in research, and the first Afro-American urologist to become a faculty member at the University of Miami. Dr. Gousse became a physician because he wanted to make an impact on the most critical aspect of people's lives, their health, and that he also aspired to contribute to the advancement of medical knowledge and education. Graduating from Yale Medical School with honors, Dr. Gousse has been the program director of the Urology Residence Training Program of Jackson Memorial Jospital for the past six years.. He is one of the few fellowship trained female urologist in South Florida, and the only one to have trained with Dr. Shlomo Raz, who is widely recognized as the foremost expert in the field. With extensive surgical experience in the field of transvaginal anti-incontinence a nd pelvic floor prolapse surgery. He also performs urethral reconstruction and lower urinary tract reconstructive procedures in male patients. He specialized in treatment of urinary incontinence after prostate surgery. As a researcher, Professor Gousse has focused on the role that diabetes has on t he bladder and kidneys, the anatomical basis of female pelvic floor prolapse using MRI, and treatment outcome measures in the management of spinal cord patients, neurostimulators and Botox injections in urination problems. Dr. Gousse's goal is to develop several new drugs to treat bladder conditions. Collaborating with Professor Vinata Lokeshwar PhD, he is co-Principal Investigator in an NIH sponsored research grant to investigate molecular markers which can aide in the diagnosis of Interstitial Cystitis, an incurable and devastating bladder condition which typically affects young women. He is also the principal investigator of numerous Investigational Review Board (IRB) protocols studying the newest non-surgical management of bladder control problems. One of the most exciting is the use of Botulinum-A-toxin (Botox) to treat overactive bladders, a condition affecting more than 33 million Americans. Dr. Gousse's other passions include writing. He has co-authored more than 50 peer-reviewed medical articles and has written several book chapters . Dr. Gousse lectures extensively in North America, Europe, Asia, and South America on female and male voiding dysfunction and he holds regular patient-oriented sessions for men and women with bladder control problems. Among Dr. Gousse's professional accomplishments to date, he is the most proud that: One of the first Afro-American Tenured Professor in a surgical field at the University of Miami, Miller School of medicine In addition to balancing personal family life with his professional life, Dr. Gousse continues to be very involved in the South Florida community. His volunteer work includes: free prostate screenings for people at risk in the community; being a guest medical talk shows that help inform people about health issues; he is an active board member of the Center for Haitian Studies in Miami; he is the President of the non-profit organization Haitian American Leadership Organization (HALO)and a Honorary Member of the Columbian Urologic Society.
